What is Kriya Yoga?
Kriya, meaning "action" in Sanskrit, is an ancient practice designed to invoke evolution, expansion, and liberation. It’s more than just physical postures; it combines yogic techniques that help you enhance your energy, access deeper states of awareness, and foster personal transformation.
Through specific actions, Kriya Yoga prepares the body, heart, and mind to move into greater harmony with life. It empowers you to cope with increased energy levels, such as Kundalini energy, and helps you transform old patterns that don't serve you and create new, positive ones.
The Power of Kriya: Action Toward Liberation
In Sanskrit, Kri means "action" or "to do," while Ya refers to the Atman or soul. Kriya is an action that leads to expansion and liberation, unlike karma, which creates bondage. Through Kriya, we learn to manage the intense energy that comes from awakening to the totality of life. This practice helps you gradually develop the ability to hold and sustain increased Kundalini energy, which, without proper preparation, can feel overwhelming.
Kriya Yoga Across Traditions
Kriya Yoga exists across various traditions, including Kundalini, Hatha, Tantra, and Ashtanga. While the methods differ, all Kriya traditions share a common goal: evolutionary action that transforms the practitioner on every level. Historically, Kriya passes directly from teacher to student through intimate, personalised teachings, which is why many Kriyas remain unwritten.
Today, this personal transmission remains essential for those seeking to deepen their personalised practice (Sadhana). The combination of Kriya techniques—whether breathwork, asanas, mudras, or meditation—is tailored to each individual’s needs, ensuring that the practice supports personal evolution.
The Components of Kriya
A Kriya Set may include various techniques such as:
- Pranayama (breathwork): To balance and energise.
- Mudras: Hand or body positions to direct energy.
- Bandhas: Energy locks that regulate prana.
- Meditation: To cultivate awareness and deepen inner connection.
- Mantra: Sacred sounds to invoke specific responses.
Movement: To disperse or direct energy

Why Kriya Yoga Works
Kriya Yoga is ideal for those who may struggle with focus or feel overwhelmed by traditional concentration-based practices. Instead of forcing the mind, Kriya allows awareness to flow naturally, leading to spontaneous meditation. This approach helps clear emotional and mental blockages, creating space for more peace, clarity, and balance in your life.
